Substrata

Series coordinator: Anda-Ioana Sfinteș

The term substratum/substrata designates the concept of a foundation/basis – always present by definition, yet less visible or even hidden. The substratum may be regarded as a separate element, but also as a system that ensures the functioning as well as the resilience of other elements and systems.

The Substrata series of publications pursues fundamental objectives of architectural education and lays emphasis on the coherent relationships that must be developed between the different layers and substrata that build up and compose a project (its accompanying discourse included). Understanding each element that one works with as well as its meanings allows the user to configure and reconfigure the project, in pursuit of the significance that sustains and lends depth to the architectural solution.

From the research on the themes connected with a particular programme to the understanding of a context, from the presentation of the project to the attainment of a certain degree of complexity regarding architecture from a multidisciplinary perspective, the series aims not to offer solutions but to promote critical and individual approaches to different aspects of contemporary architectural design and to provide starting points for the identification of suitable strategies.
